When should I visit a doctor for a sleep problem?
You should visit a doctor when you have trouble maintaining a normal pattern of sleep and symptoms are interfering with daily activities. Click here for an overview of commonly treated sleep disorders.

What should I bring to my sleep study?
The sleep lab is fully equipped to provide you with a comfortable environment for your sleep study. Pack as if you are visiting a hotel, including basic toiletry items. Shower facilities are available if you desire to shower after your sleep study. Soap, shampoo, blow dryer, and towels are provided by the sleep lab.

We do require all patients to wear sleepwear during the study. We recommend you wear loose-fitting, button-front pajamas or a t-shirt and shorts or sweat pants during your study. Do not bring anything silky or slippery to wear. One piece gowns, jumpsuit-type or tight garments should be avoided.

You may want to bring your own pillow to make you more comfortable. Some patients also like to bring books, magazines, snacks, and decaffeinated drinks.

What time do I have to go to bed? What time will I be able to leave in the morning?
Lights out is usually between 9:30pm and 11:00pm to allow sufficient recording time for your sleep study. Your overnight sleep study should be over by 6:00am. You will be able to leave between 6-7am.

What if I can’t fall asleep?
We often hear “I’ll never fall asleep with all these wires!” The good news is that people do sleep “wires and all.” Because you are in different surroundings, it may take you a little longer than usual to fall asleep. The wires are positioned out of your way and are seldom noticed by anyone while they are sleeping. You are free to turn from side to side during the study.

What if a wire comes off while I’m sleeping?
If a piece of equipment comes undone, the sleep technician will know it immediately. The sleep technician will replace it in a manner that causes the least amount of disruption to your sleep.

What if I need to go to the bathroom?
You will be able to access the restroom at any time.

How will you get an accurate measure of my sleep if I’m sleeping in a different bed
with all those wires?

The body functions that we monitor will occur naturally, no matter where you sleep. We monitor brain activity, heart activity, oxygen levels, airway patency, and muscle movements which are unrelated to where you sleep or how long you sleep.

Are sleep lab services covered by insurance?
Most insurance companies provide coverage for the evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. We do suggest that you contact your insurance company (prior to your study) for your policy’s specific conditions. The sleep lab staff can assist you with this process.

Do I take my medications?
Continue to take all medications as normal unless otherwise directed by the physician ordering the sleep study. Please bring your medications with you to the sleep lab.

What if I don’t have a referring physician?
While it is true that physicians refer a majority of our patients, we do have openings to accommodate patients who come directly to us with sleep associated problems. If you do not have a doctor to refer you, one of our sleep specialists will be happy to evaluate you.
